About Dr. Melville Q. Wyche, Jr.

Dr. Melville Q. Wyche, Jr. is a pioneer in the field of anesthesiology. A graduate of Meharry Medical College in 1963, Dr. Wyche began his career with the U.S. Army, where he became chief of Anesthesia and Operating Room at the United States Army Hospital in Camp Zama, Japan.

In 1967, he became the first Black resident in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania and, later, its first Black faculty member. Over the decades, Dr. Wyche held numerous leadership roles, including serving as director of Anesthesiology at Pennsylvania Hospital and as chairman of the newly established Department of Anesthesiology at Howard University Hospital.

He also became the first Black physician elected to membership in the prestigious Association of University Anesthesiologists. A resident of Bowie, Maryland, Dr. Wyche remains active in his community alongside his wife, Alice Mahan Wyche. Together, they operate assisted living facilities and support local organizations, including the Seafarers Yacht Club and Seafarers Foundation in Annapolis, Maryland.
